Why You Should Read The Spearcrest Kings Series By Aurora Reed.

Dark romance is one of my favorite genres, and every once in a while I come across a series that completely takes over my reading life. The Spearcrest Kings series by Aurora Reed was one of those rare reads. It's dark academia What started as curiosity quickly turned into a full-blown obsession as I found myself binge-reading book after book, unable to put the series down. It's been a while that a series consumed me like this. If you want a series with some near perfect but obsessed, possessive MMC who falls first and harder, intense yearning, addictive storyline, and emotional highs then give this series a try. In this review, I'll share what I loved, what didn't quite work for me, and whether I think this series is worth adding to your TBR.

This was my first read by Aurora Reed and it's safe to say she just gained a new fan. If you haven't heard about the series before here are the books in order:

  • Spearcrest Knight
  • Spearcrest Rose
  • Spearcrest Prince
  • Spearcrest Saints
  • Spearcrest Wolf
  • Spearcrest Devil
  • Spearcrest Queen
While it's called a series, the books can be read as standalones. However be prepared for minor spoilers if you read ahead. I'll share my recommended reading order later in this review. Most of the books follows members of spearcrest academy's elite friend group, with each story focusing on a different couple. Each book has their own tropes and all contain a good amount of spice, crazy plot. As it's a dark romance it contains some heavy stuffs that might be disturbing so please check out the trigger warnings before diving in.

So now for the individual reviews:

Spearcrest Knight

Plot: Five years ago, Sophie Sutton considered Evan Knight her closest friend. Now, he's the one person who makes her life miserable. As their final year at Spearcrest Academy begins, a tutoring arrangement forces them together, reigniting old wounds, buried feelings, and a rivalry neither of them can escape. What starts as a battle of wills soon becomes something far more complicated.

Sophie-Evan

My Review: The first book of the series follows Evan Knight and Sophie Sutton as our main character. It's a dark bully romance with a friends to enemies to lovers trope. Bully romance isn't usually my favorite trope but what intrigued me was if he loves her so much, why is he bullying her? While I found his reasoning a bit weak, Sophie's character more than made up for it. She has a backbone, stands up for herself and refuses to let anyone walk all over her. If you read a lot of romance you'll know how most of the FMC never have a backbone they never defend themselves but Sophie was anything but that. Another thing I loved most was despite Evan's attempts to act like he didn't care, everyone around them could see how utterly obsessed and pathetically in love he was with her. I also adored Evan's family. They were really cute. I loved how they welcomed and cared for Sophie.

                          Favorite Quote

"I even like it when you hurt me, because I'd rather be hurt by you than adored by anybody else.''
                                          -Evan Knight

Spearcrest Queen

Plot: At Harvard Law, Sophie Sutton has no room for distractions especially not Evan Knight, the privileged heir she's loved for years. Determined to protect her future, Sophie tries to end their relationship before rumors can destroy everything she's worked for. But Evan refuses to let her go. Desperate to keep her in his life, he agrees to keep their love a secret. As they navigate hidden feelings, painful pasts, and impossible choices, Sophie and Evan must decide whether their love is worth risking it all.

My Review: Although this the last book of the series I highly recommend reading it right after Spearcrest Knight since it's a direct sequel of Sophie and Evan's story. It's starts from where we left off from the first book. If you read the first book you'll know Evan is not someone who can easily let Sophie go. I felt like this book provided a proper closure to their story making it a must read for fans of the couple.

                                 Favorite Quote

''I'll be your dirty little secret, Sutton. I'll be whatever you want.''                                                                                  - Evan Knight

Spearcrest Rose

Plot: Seraphina Rosenthal once had everything wealth, beauty, and dreams of a successful fashion career. But when her controlling father takes away her trust fund and her future plans, Seraphina is determined to prove she can still come out on top. Her solution? Use Noah Watson, a hardworking boxer and gardener, to get back at her father. The only problem is that Noah isn't who she expected him to be. As their fake arrangement grows into something real, Seraphina must decide whether holding onto her pride is worth losing the man who sees her for who she truly is.

My Review: My only complaint with this book is that it wasn't a full length novel. I honestly wanted more. You'll meet Seraphine in the first book and chances are you probably won't like her that much, as you'll see her as spoiled rich side character. So, when I saw she has her own book I was surprised. But once you read her book you see her in a different light, and of course there's Noah. I didn't expect to love him as much as I did because, let's be honest, we book girlies usually have a soft spot for billionaire MMCs. But Noah won me over with how calm, patient, understanding, and undeniably sexy he was. If you love rich girl/poor boy romances and fake dating trope, this book delivers both perfectly.

                                Favorite Quote

'' You like girl's being mean to you, Noah?'' ''No, princess,'' he says, looking up at me with
hooded eyes and a lazy grin.''I like you being mean to me.''

Spearcrest Prince

Plot: An arranged engagement brings spoiled aristocrat Séverin Montcroix and fiercely independent artist Anaïs Nishinara together at Spearcrest Academy. Determined to resist each other, they soon find themselves caught in a battle of wills, attraction, and unexpected feelings.

Anaïs-Séverin

My Review: Séverin, our MMC says he doesn't care about his fiancé Anaïs at all yet she's the only person he ever seems to talk about. To be honest his constant denial about liking her irked me a bit but his obsession and jealousy kind of makes up for it. I loved how bothered he was by the fact that Anaïs was completely unbothered by him. One of my favorite dynamics is when the MMC falls first and harder while the FMC stays cool and collected, and this book delivered exactly that. Anaïs is someone I aspire to be she doesn't care what anybody thinks about her and she does what she wants to do. Also the love confession at the end was epic considering they're still in high school. If you enjoy dark academia, arranged marriage, boy-falls-first-and-harder, and obsessed MMC tropes, then you should definitely give this book a try.

" I didn't know you smoked.'' I pointed at his cigarette. " That's a disgusting habit." "I know." He rolls his eyes but immediately tosses his cigarette to the floor and stomps on it. " I'm quitting."

Spearcrest Saints

Plot: Theodora Dorokhova may seem to have the perfect life, but beneath the surface she's trapped by her controlling father and the expectations placed upon her. Zachary Blackwood, her longtime academic rival, is the only one who sees the real her. As they compete in their final year at Spearcrest Academy, years of rivalry, hidden feelings, and undeniable chemistry collide in a heartfelt romance about love, ambition, and finding the courage to choose your own future.

Theodora-Zach

My Review: If you're not going to read one book from the series then just read this one. I'm begging you to read this book. Zachary Blackwood completely stole my heart. There's not a single fault I could find in this book. I'll be honest, the MMCs in the previous books do some pretty awful things that might not be forgivable for everyone, but Zach was PERFECT. He kind of reminded me of Sang Yan from The first frost (iykyk) I have been itching to read about Zach and Theodora from the first time they were mentioned in the first book and it didn't disappoint. The love and devotion this man has for Theodora knows no bounds. I mean he saves himself for her only ever loved her and she's the air he breathes like quite literally as he gets panic attack at the thought of losing her. And Theodora? My girl deserved the world. Watching everything she endured broke my heart, which made seeing her finally get the love she deserved even more satisfying. Also this book was packed with so many beautiful quote that it was hard to choose one. If you want dark academia romance with intense yearning, academic rivals, "it's always been you" then definitely read this book.

                      Favorite Quote

" I love you atrociously." He smiles, the hue of desire in his expression shifting, darkening into a sort of  yearning melancholy." I love you with evey atom of my being, and I love every atom of yours. I love you desperately, like a starving man. I love you to distraction. And I think you love me too Theodora Dorokhova. You just aren't quite ready to say it yet."

Spearcrest Wolf

Plot: Years after being pushed out of Zahara Blackwood's life, Iakov Kavinski is forced back into it when her brother asks him to protect her from a dangerous stalker. As old wounds, unresolved feelings, and undeniable attraction resurface, Zahara and Iakov must confront the past while fighting the pull between them in this emotional brother's-best-friend romance.

Zahara-Iakov

My Review: Iakov believes he doesn't deserve a happily ever after because of his dark past, but honestly, he deserves the whole world. He's loyal, respectful, and an incredible friend. Despite his attraction to Zahara, he does everything he can to fight those feelings because he values his friendship with her brother too much to risk losing it. One thing I loved about him was how patient he was with Zahara. No matter how rude or hurtful she could be, he always listened to her and tried to understand where she was coming from. While I understood the reasons behind Zahara's behavior and sympathized with everything she was going through, I still found some of the ways she treated Iakov frustrating. This book deals with some heavy and potentially triggering topics, so definitely check the trigger warnings before diving in. If you enjoy brother's best friend romances, black cat x golden retriever energy, protective biker MMCs, and plenty of angst, then this book is worth checking out.

                         Favorite Quote

"Then live until I allow you to die." He watches me in silence for a long time. Then he drops to his knees, startling me, and he bows his head in front of me, resting his forehead against my thighs. "Until you allow me to die, then. I swear it"

Spearcrest Devil

Plot: Luca Fletcher-Lowe thrives on power, secrets, and control, until a mysterious woman outsmarts him and disappears. Willow Lynch is driven by revenge and has no intention of becoming another pawn in Luca's game. As their dangerous cat-and-mouse chase intensifies, attraction and vengeance collide in this dark and addictive romance.

Willow-Luca

My Review: Luca was absolutely wild. From the moment he was introduced in the series I was curious to know what kind of person can tame this wild man and then Willow turned out to be even wilder. I think this might be the first time I've read a FMC with this level of chaotic energy. They both match their freak quite perfectly. They were practically at each other throats until the very end. One of my most favorite things about this book was that "The Luca Fletcher-Lowe" who spent the entire series mocking his friends for being obsessed with their women, become completely obsessed with Willow himself. It was incredibly satisfying to read. She quite literally destroyed him and all he was able to think was how to get her back. As I've said before I love it when the MMC loses his shit over his girl and the FMC is far less effected. So, in conclusion do give it a try if you love enemies and lovers, boy obsessed, forced proximity, man hater FMC×psycho billionaire MMC. Don't forget to check out the trigger warnings.

                             Favorite Quote

"Deal." she says."Do your worst, Luca." She tries to yank her finger out of my grip but I hold on to them, lifting her hand to my mouth. I kiss her knuckles, gentle and sweet. "Anything for you, Lynch"

I came across these series completely by chance and ended up binge reading every book. I'm so glad I did because this series perfectly satisfied my cravings to read a good dark romance series filled with intense yearning, strong female leads, boy fell first and harder trope. I wanted to share my thoughts and experience with the series in case it helps someone to discover their next favorite read. This is my first reviewing an entire book series so, I hope you found the post helpful if you've read the spearcrest kings series or decide to pick it up after reading this review, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
